The Rangers and Islanders are currently playing their last scheduled game against each other in the 2010 calendar year so I thought it would be appropriate to take some time out to talk a little bit about the games in this rivalry in 2010.
Neither of the teams made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. The Rangers were the closest to qualifying missing it by only 1 point.
The following standings are up to the minute. It includes all games that took place within the 2010 calendar year including the current score between the two New York area teams right now which is a 3-2 Rangers lead.
1. New York Rangers (5-1-0; 83.3%)
Even though I am Islander fabn, I have to admit, as I am being completely objective, that the Rangers were clearly the better team this year.
2. New York Islanders (1-5-0; 16.7%)
The Islanders were horrible in the 2009-2010 season losing all of their meetings with the Rangers in the 2010 half of that season. They won one game against the Rangers so far this season but it is not enough to dignify them as the better team in the rivalry for 2010 no matter how tonight's game ends.
There you have it! Hopefully the Islanders play better next year. They have started up somewhat of a win streak in the last few games going into the end of the year so I am hopeful for next year.
The first meeting for the Islanders and Rangers in 2011 is on March 15th and the final meeting of the season is on the 31st of the same month to close up the 2010-2011 series in rivalry but for the 2010 calendar year, the Rangers win the yearly series.

Quick Update
THe second period of the Devils-Islanders game just started and the Devils scored cutting the Islanders lead 3-1. The Metro Ice Challenge standings don't change with this score but I thought I would update the score quickly.
GO ISLES!!!!
GO ISLES!!!!
2010-2011 Metro Ice Challenge
I am watching the Islanders whooping the Devils' butts right now in the first period 3-0 (something I never heard myself saying in a while), and I thought I would start a hockey blog. I already have a soccer blog since soccer is my favorite sport but my friend got me turned onto hockey so I thought why not start a blog about it.
Since, I'm watching the Islanders--Devils game right now, I thought I would start by talking about the 2010-2011 edition of the Metro Ice Challenge. Here are the standings as of today (12/23/10) with my analysis, including W-L-OTL percentage and goal difference.
1. New York Rangers (4-1-0, 80.0%, 18-12, +6)
This season, I don't see how the Rangers can end this season without winning the Metro Ice Challenge. I'm not a Rangers fan but I have to admit that they would have to screw up pretty badly in order to let this slip away from them.
2. New York Islanders (3-2-0, 60.0%, 15-12, +3)
The above record is most up to date as of the last few minutes. The first period of the Devils-Islanders game has ended 3-0 for the Islanders. Even if the Islanders don't make the playoffs this season, I can see them doing well in the Metro Ice Challenge. They have not let the Rangers walk all over them this season based on past games this season and the Devils don't seem to be much of a challenge.
3. New Jersey Devils (0-4-0, 0.0%, 1-11, -10)
The Devils have been a joke this season. They are the current title holders with a 2009-2010 record of 7-4-1 in the Metro Ice Challenge. This season, they have already matched last season's losses and no wins recorded in the Metro Ice Challenge. I don't seeing them taking the title again this year.
